Direct observation of the environment and practical scientific enquiry outside the classroom are fundamental to an understanding of the nature of science as well as a source of inspiration and motivation. Outdoor biology
is a well-developed tradition in the UK and provides many examples of good practice that could profitably be extended to the teaching of other scientific disciplines. Three case studies are presented that illustrate good practice in science teaching, whilst minimising cost and timetable disruption by making use of school grounds.
