In this second of a 10-part series, we explore how hormones during labour are continuous and do not identify themselves with stages – they instead respond to the emotion of labour. An interruption of oxytocin can lead to contractions ceasing and increased pain, and parental attachment and behaviour could be affected. A midwife should consider her own attitudes and behaviour within the birth environment as tension between a woman and midwife may lead to a rupture in the relationship, which could be a catalyst to a hormonal blackout.
