This essay re-interprets the distinctive ‘generations’ of Romantic writing as self-aware expressions of cultural and political affiliation, proposing a third generation which extends the British Romantic period into the commodity culture of the mid-nineteenth century. The essay includes a wide range of evidence, including original analysis of texts by Beddoes, Keats, Shelley, Smith, Wordsworth, et al. I hope the essay will be an influential intervention into literary history and ‘periodisation’.
