The NHS is the largest employer of black and minority ethnic (BME) staff in the UK. Other health-care systems around the world may also be major employers of ethnic minority groups. The Department of Health (2003) has highlighted the role of these staff and discussed the progress being made in promoting equality and diversity in the workforce. With growing multi-ethnic communities, the report suggests that there remains an imbalance in the workforce and the levels at which such staff are working.
