Abstract
For the past fifty years there has been a research tradition in the martial arts advocating their physical and psychological benefits. Despite numerous research articles, there are inconsistencies in the martial art style, the aspect being investigated, the sample, duration of the research. Such inconsistencies affect the research being generalised to a wider population: they are only indicative of potential themes for future research. This paper provides an overview of research, specifically in relation to the psychological benefits of training and the impact on the sense of self.
From the thematic discussion of literature, an invite to participate in research is offered. The vision is to develop a research-informed, martial arts inspired programme, which can be taught in schools, led by martial arts instructors and practitioners associated with IMAS, who in turn can coach teachers in the final programme.
