In recent years there has been a considerable shift in UK health policy towards developing an NHS that places a real emphasis on the promotion of health. Primary care services are key to achieving this aim. This article examines the meaning of health and its determinants, approaches to health promotion, public health and health protection in primary care. An overview of primary care oriented health promotion activity in relation to diabetes, cancer
prevention, cardiovascular disease and obesity is also provided.
