Abstract
The second edition of High-Performance Training for Sports edited by David Joyce and Daniel Lewindon aims to provide the reader with a deep understanding of the physical training of athletes. David and Daniel have collaborated with 39 world leading practitioners/experts within the realm of high-performance sport and in doing so, their aim is fully achieved. The book includes 27 chapters (17 are entirely new!) which is again divided into 3 parts: establishing and retaining resilience, developing athletic capabilities, and enhancing and sustaining performance. Strength, speed, agility, movement mechanics and movement efficiency remain a strong presence within the book.
However, an area that is emphasised throughout this edition compared to the last one, is consideration of the softer skills required when working with athletes. The non-negotiables presented at the end of each chapter provide an effective take-home message. This book is an outstanding resource for coaches, sport scientists and medical
professionals involved in optimising physical preparation to enhance performance. My copy of the first edition is completely dog-eared. I have a feeling it won’t be long until the same happens to this one.
